

I was able to play and get things done rather quickly. Gamepad controls work very well with this game, making it easy to learn and adapt from PC. They had even more opportunity to put in more, but they have a fair amount. There is even a car that looks like a dog! Other things, like the ice-cream truck on the cover of the game, can be found throughout. Dogs can be found as characters and used much like people, using weapons and driving cars. This game has plenty of fun Easter Eggs throughout.

Even using objects just to throw as projectiles feels great and can get a good laugh. All you have to do is destroy some furniture if you’re ever in a pinch. It is easy to find some new weapons, with a variety of guns or melee options available around the maps. I liked having the option to go where there should be the supplies that are needed at the moment. Having the ability to regain control after a misplay is great for new players.ĭeath Road To Canada starts with one or two characters with a car and a weapon. Choosing a place to go could get you killed or keep you going, adding plenty of variables to add complexity and depth to the game’s difficulty. The game gives you many choices during your adventure. Be careful on your adventure because you need to keep your group healthy and supplied. Whoever you choose will help you survive and provide different specialties to the team. The traits do things like make you better with medicine, a better fighter or some mobility. All of the characters have a unique trait or characteristic. You get a small group of survivors and can take more with you as you adventure. You have a geographical location for which you are headed to provide salvation (Canada in this case). The premise of the game is much like the book The Road. Both of these genres are popular and found liberally within indie games, but Death Road to Canada combines them to make for some great gameplay.

This one’s due end of Fall 2013, and will be a PC, Mac and Linux title when it launches other versions are planned, but won’t be available right away. Or there’s unique survivors like Horse Mann, the panda, the kid, the Mountie … the list goes on, and the developer’s hoping to include more special events, characters, art and easter eggs, if the cash rolls in. There’s an interactive fiction element here, as the people on your team influence the choices you can make, and the results. The whole thing’s different each time you play, and that includes the collection of survivors you collect and have to keep happy on your deadly road trip. You can have an entire team of mutts in a muscle car if that’s what turns you on. Want a cat? They raise morale, you know, and dogs can fight for you, or be trained to drive cars. Yes, it’s Kickstarter time for this odd little soul, and at time of writing it’s already raised $7,553 of its modest $25,000 goal, with 28 days left to go.

Along the way through this randomized road trip permadeath simulation you’ll discover fellow survivors and scavenge for supplies, but watch out for those dumb-but-determined undead, as they have designs on your tender nether parts. I don’t even … you can train a dog to drive a car? There are kittens? A dude in a horse suit?
